Out of Sight
- Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening. The topic discussed in class was editing a scene and the film presented in class was “Out of Sight”, directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez. A career bank robber (Jack Foley) breaks out of jail numerous times, but this time shares a moment of mutual attraction with a U.S. Marshal he has kidnapped, and she as well falls in love with him. The scenes are edited with jumping from when robbing the bank to being in jail.
- Find a related article and summarize the content. In the article, Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney made a perfect couple on opposite sides of the law, written by Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, discusses about how Steven Soderbergh showcases his films to “make a point of showing the similarities between a criminal’s craft and their own – misdirection, practicality, the importance of timing, and knowing your tools.” He is an American director who is most captivated with showmanship, its tricks and facades, although his films are not extravagant at all. For example, in the beginning of the film when Jack robs the bank showcases Soderbergh’s simple direction of both Jack’s bluff and his arrest outside the bank. Also the millions’ of uncut diamonds in the fish tank at the end of the film. - Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.? The article further explained the direction Steven Soderbergh was going for and how his films usually are. I was not impressed on how the film was. I think certain parts were not edited the best. Although, this film was released in 1998, perhaps editing was more difficult back then. Such as scenes would just go black and go to the next scene, did not make certain scenes flow together.
- Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. For the film, I enjoyed the plot but was not impressed with the film itself. The sources say the actors has chemistry, I think it could have been better. The overall film felt dead, some scenes were lively but there was a lack of character development. They acted well but the characters really had a personality that stuck out.
